Ask most runners about altitude training and they picture elite Kenyan athletes disappearing into the mountains of Iten at 8,000 feet, emerging weeks later as something closer to machines than humans. What they don't picture is a 42-year-old accountant from Montpelier jogging the dirt roads outside town at 1,400 feet of elevation, quietly building the kind of aerobic engine that shocks her at the Chicago finish line six months later.

But that's exactly what's happening across Vermont, and it's worth paying attention to.

The Numbers Don't Lie

Vermont's average elevation hovers between 1,000 and 2,000 feet, with many popular training routes — particularly around the Mad River Valley, the Northeast Kingdom, and the hills surrounding Burlington — pushing runners consistently above 1,500 feet. That's not the dramatic altitude of Colorado Springs or Flagstaff, but exercise physiologists are increasingly clear that you don't need thin air to get meaningful gains.

"There's a threshold effect that kicks in even at moderate elevations," says Dr. Rachel Holt, an exercise physiologist who has worked with endurance athletes in the Northeast for over fifteen years. "Once you're consistently training above 1,000 feet, your body starts making real adaptations — more red blood cells, better oxygen-carrying capacity, improved mitochondrial efficiency. The changes are subtler than what you'd see at 8,000 feet, but they're absolutely real, and when you drop down to sea level, you feel them."

The mechanism is straightforward enough. At elevation, even modest elevation, the partial pressure of oxygen in the air is slightly lower. Your body responds by producing more erythropoietin — the hormone that stimulates red blood cell production. More red blood cells mean more oxygen delivered to working muscles per heartbeat. More oxygen means you can sustain a faster pace for longer before your legs start screaming.

When you then race at sea level — say, at a flat, coastal marathon — your newly enriched blood is suddenly operating in an oxygen-rich environment. The result, for many runners, feels like having an extra gear they didn't know existed.

What Vermont Runners Are Actually Experiencing

Mike Tessaro has been running out of South Burlington for nine years. He finished Vermont City Marathon three times before deciding to register for the Boston Marathon as a bucket-list goal. He didn't change his training dramatically — same routes, same weekly mileage, roughly the same schedule.

"I honestly went into Boston just hoping to finish feeling good," Mike says. "I wasn't chasing a PR. But somewhere around mile 18, I realized I had way more left in the tank than I'd ever had at that point in a race. I ended up running the last eight miles faster than any eight-mile stretch I'd run in Vermont. I took six minutes off my previous best."

His story isn't unique. Talk to runners who regularly train on Vermont's terrain and then race in flatter, lower cities — Boston, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia — and a pattern emerges. They feel stronger in the back half of races. Their perceived effort at goal pace feels easier. Recovery between hard efforts during the race feels quicker.

Sarah Kimball, who trains with a Burlington-based running group and raced Chicago last fall, describes it as "running with the volume turned down." Everything that normally feels hard at mile 22 just felt... manageable.

The Terrain Factor Multiplies Everything

Elevation alone doesn't tell the whole story. Vermont's hills force runners to develop biomechanical efficiency and muscular strength that flat-course training simply can't replicate.

"When you're constantly working uphill and controlling your descent, you're recruiting stabilizer muscles, building posterior chain strength, and developing a more economical stride," Dr. Holt explains. "Those runners show up at a flat marathon and their form holds up in the late miles when everyone else is falling apart. It's not just about oxygen — it's about structural resilience."

This is why runners who train almost exclusively on treadmills or flat paths can have excellent cardiovascular fitness and still struggle at mile 20. The legs simply haven't been asked to do that kind of sustained work under fatigue.

Getting the Most Out of Vermont's Natural Advantage

So how do you actually leverage this if you're training for a goal race? A few practical approaches:

Don't avoid the hills — seek them out. It sounds obvious, but many runners default to flat routes when they're worried about pace or effort. Embrace the elevation change. Your GPS pace means less than your effort level when you're climbing.

Schedule a flat tune-up race. About three to four weeks before your goal marathon, find a flat half marathon or 10K at lower elevation. This gives you a chance to feel the sea-level effect in a race context before it matters most.

Trust your effort, not your watch, on hilly training runs. Running by feel on Vermont terrain builds the internal calibration you'll need when race day arrives and everything feels surprisingly easy at the start.

Stay consistent through the shoulder seasons. The temptation to back off during mud season or late fall is real. But consistent exposure to Vermont's elevation — even on shorter runs — maintains the adaptations you've built.

The Quiet Confidence of the Green Mountain Runner

There's something else worth naming, something that doesn't show up in VO2 max numbers or red blood cell counts. Runners who train through Vermont winters, on icy trails and windy ridge roads, develop a certain psychological toughness that translates directly to race day.

When the weather at Chicago is unseasonably warm, or Boston throws a headwind at you on the Newton hills, or your nutrition plan goes sideways at mile 16 — the runners who've been grinding through February in Vermont don't panic. They've already done hard things. They know what it feels like to keep moving when conditions aren't cooperating.

That's not physiology. That's just Vermont doing what Vermont does.

The altitude advantage is real, the science is solid, and the proof is showing up at finish lines across the country. But maybe the biggest edge Vermont gives you is simpler than any of it: it teaches you to run strong when running strong is the last thing that feels easy.
